Data Assimilation Right

Development and application of data assimilation techniques

The demand for marine products has increased to the point that the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) has been formulated and initiated by the international research community.  However, the relatively small spatial scales of ocean variability and the special nature of the available ocean observations pose unique challenges for the oceanographic community that will require innovative solutions.  Data assimilation projects have been initiated under the basin-scale project that span the range of scales from tens to thousands of km and from days to decades.  A particular goal is to make the best possible use of remotely sensed data in combination with the rapidly increasing information on upper ocean variability available from profiling floats deployed and maintained through the ARGO project.
